  What is a Muscle Cramps?

A muscle cramp is a painful spasm of your muscle. It's caused by a prolonged tightening of that muscle, leading to it being shortened. You do not have any control of this spasm and the muscle often feels hard and painful. Muscle cramps, especially in the legs, are very common. The muscle may remain tender for up to 24 hours after a leg cramp.

The exact cause of muscle cramps is unknown, but many experts think it is related to poor flexibility, muscle fatigue or doing new activity. Other factors associated with muscle cramps include exercising in extreme heat, dehydration and electrolyte depletion.

Another key activity that will help to prevent cramps and spasms is stretching. Keeping your muscles loose and flexible will help to stop them from tightening up and cramping. Be sure to stretch the muscles groups that are most prone to cramping both before and after exercise or strenuous physical activity.

 
The other important activity that is very effective in helping to prevent cramp is ensuring adequate hydration and electrolyte replenishment.

If you seem to be prone to muscle cramps and spasms you should also look at increasing your intake of minerals and electrolytes. The minerals that are most important are Potassium, Calcium and Magnesium.

How To Treat Muscle Cramps?

You can usually treat muscle cramps with self-care measures. For many cramps of the feet and legs, standing up and walking around will help stretch out the muscle.

Gently massaging the muscle will often help it to relax, as will applying warmth from a heating pad or hot soak.
